Why make a homemade structure?
There are many good cleaning tables available in the market. If you are in a hurry to get the necessary gear for your next fishing expedition you could select from any of the options available. But if you have some spare time on your hands, you may also want to consider building your own cleaning station. This would not only be less expensive than going for a ready-made option off the counter, you will also get an opportunity to customize it to a tool which suits your requirement. Not to mention building something from scratch would be fun and would give you the chance to enjoy using something you made from your own talent and creativity.
Components Of A Fish Cleaning Table
Whether you purchase a fishing cleaning table from the store or you build it by yourself, the following components are the basic requirements for any sort of cleaning table.
- The frame
The strength and nature of the frame you choose would depend on the nature of activities you wish to perform. The material you use may have to be light enough to be portable and strong enough to allow you to cut larger fish species. The most popular material is PVC which is both lightweight and cheap. Alternatively you could use two by fours which would make a stronger structure.
- Cutting board
Polyethylene cutting boards are readily available in most stores and are inexpensive. But the drawback of plastic would be that it is relatively more difficult to disinfect. Other options available include wood and granite. Wood boards are more expensive but are recommended by professionals as they don’t dull the knife blade easily. Granite is the most hardy and easy to clean but is a material which is difficult to work with.
- Sink
You could go for a sink unit or something similar that would serve the same purpose. Using a hose or hose attachment would be a low cost option to meet your functional requirements. Installing a sink unit would require a bit more effort. You would also need additional links and adapters to connect the sink to a running water source.
Apart from the above, you also need a collection point for waste material. A bucket or bin would be suitable as long as you can store the waste until you can discard it. This is critical as you need to manage your waste disposal to ensure the whole fishing process remains hygienic. Also you could be more creative by adding storage slots for knives and other fishing cleaning equipment you need.
